Customer Reviews

One of their Masterpiece !

Rating

First... You have to know that I'm a big fan of Dream Theater since 1998 (when I 1st listened to "Images & Words" and "Awake")!

This said, I would say that IMO Dream Theater are becoming better and better with each new album (more mature songwriting: in the form, the melody construction, etc.). BUT THIS ONE... WOW ! it's their Masterpiece ! The songs are well constructed, catchy, plenty of "Instrumental Madness", progressive enough, melodic enough and metal enough ! It's the perfect album ! If you liked their Octavarium stuff along with Systematic Chaos, It's a NO BRAINER... because IMO it's the conjonction of those 2 albums along with their growing experience (life and musical experiences). In this album, there are relax stuff, more progressive passages (compared to Train of Thoughts and Systematic Chaos), still with a metal attitude (like Octavarium & Systematic Chaos)... in a perfect balance (within mostly all the songs)! That's why it's one of their best albums ever made (to date) !

for the 3CD edition, if you're like me (a musician), the "Instrumental" CD alone worth the price, it's a 6/6 ! I prefer the Instrumentals "Wither" and "The Best of Times" over the ones with lyrics, wich I found too cheezy and "over-written" (that's my opinion!).

The 3rd CD (cover songs) is "so-so" for me. I only like 3 songs/6 (To Tame A Land, Lark's Tongue In Aspic pt.II and Odyssey), but you could prefer other songs or more songs than me... it depends what your musical tastes are !

In the end, if you're just a casual Dream Theater listener, the Regular CD is enough, but if you're a hardcore fan and/or a musician, the 3 CD Edition is the one to buy !

Here's my verdict (songs ratio):

Original CD: 4/6
Instrumental: 6/6
Cover Songs: 3/6

Star Tracks: A Nightmare to Remember, The Shattered Fortress, The Count of Tuscany (THE most Epic on this album!), To Tame a Land and Larks Tongue in Aspic Pt.II

For me it's a perfect note, since the Instrumental CD and the Original CD worth the buy (one of their best compositions ever !).

Great album

Rating

Probably one of their best. So great. great musicians at the peak of their art! the cover sleeve is not too bad too.

the second disc with cover songs is also a plus value.
