Customer Reviews

Possibly the best sampler in any genre

Rating

completely agree with the raters so far. this is hands down a must buy for any music lover. ras records and tapes nailed it with this one. this is without a doubt a fantastic foray into the world of reggae and gives its listeners a great sampling of some seriously 'ire' toons.

Even if dancehall is not your thing......

Rating

There are many people (myself inclued) whose taste in reggae inclines toward "Roots Reggae" (the equivalent to Otis Redding and Curtis Mayfiled style R&B, Bob Marley type stuff) and considers the largely computerized dnacehall style an abomination. However, this collection of latter-day dancehall is so appealing that even reggae fans of the roots camp will love it. Yellowman's "Yellow Like Cheese" is not one of his more creative efforts, but its a pleasant listen. Pinchers gets raw with his vocal attack "Mass Out" while Michigan and Smiley perform some harmonic acrobatics with "Sugar Daddy." Best of all is Brigader Jerry's "Jamaica Jamaica" (recently sampled by Damien Marley for "Welcome to Jamrock"). I saw Jerry perform this live some years ago and it's one of those rockers that is as much fun to listen to as well as dance to. A few clunkers here, but on the whole its a worthwhile purchase.

"Down in Jamaica Briggy Born and grow/Ocho Rios soil I'm a love it so/I used to go to school and play tic-tac-toe/ and now on the Island we play dominoes" How can one NOT love such clever wordplay?

real reggae

This remind's me of the black market tapes in the 80's that were so heartfelt and original. This is a great cd to buy if you enjoy more than streamlined "reggae".

Cool Runnings!

Rating

This is a great deal! You get some prime examples of authentic reggae on this CD. Excellent for parties or partying. Irie vibe! My favorites are: "Rastafari Liveth" by Peter Broggs-Kick back and get cool to this one. Mellow roots. "Sugar Daddy" by Michigan and Smiley-These dudes are dope. Fun song. "Assassinator" by Eek-A-Mouse-Gotta love the mouse. Infamous scat style vocals. "Jamaica, Jamaica" by Brigadier Jerry-Probably the best song on the CD. Totally Jah-riffic! Sticky island groove. "Positive" by Black Uhuru-Guitar oriented, jammin'. "One Way" by Inner Circle-The lyrics sum it up, "One way...is to be reggae!" Grab this one and be happy. ;)
